Generally because it's ripped. People close the canvas when it's damp and never let it air-dry, or they close the top on it, and the fabric mildews and weakens. One day you go to pop the top or open the screen and - RRRIP!! Half the busses out there have ripped canvas, or replacement canvas; Vanagons are a bit newer so it's just beginning to happen. If anyone has replaced a canvas that was perfect just to add windows or change colors, it's news to me. (Although as a perveyor of poptop canvas I would be very happy if they did :-)
