Subject: Mystery squeak solved

Today I visited Mark Drillock in Carlsbad California (20 miles north of San Diego) to look at his project of making a 2 wheel Vanagon into a 4 wheel drive from a syncro junker he bought for parts. When I drove up to his home and saw 5 Vanagons in the drive in various states of repair I was impressed to say the least. Even got to see my first diesel engine in one of Mark's vans.

Well, long story short Mark wanted to see my van & engine and I mentioned that my mysterious squeak appeared again on the way to his house. I mentioned to him that it usually happened when I started the van up. I thought it was the AC belt needing tightening again.

Mark and I looked at my engine and belts. Belts were tight but we started her up a few times to locate the squeak. Mark discovered that it was a hose clamp rubbing up against some sheet metal (behind #3 cylinder I think.) Problem solved. It is virtually impossible for one person to find a squeak when he is at the front of the van and the squeak is at the back.

It is a real pleasure to meet a more experienced Vanagon lover who so willingly helps a newcomer to the world of these beautiful and versatile Vanagons. Thank you Mark.

Your new friend, William P.
