I find it difficult to believe that a belt-driven pump can deliver the same power output as the original EFI setup (which still uses a mechanical pump, note).

The EFI control unit will alter the injection timing with rpm, so giving close to the ideal timing; this will give max power/torque throughout the rev band, and may also be able to enable a much higher redline (belt-driven-pump engines run out of puff because of the fixed timing). The belt-driven pump cannot do this and will oerate with fixed injection pulses, so that the power/torque uotput will be ideal at only one fixed narrow rpm band, as in any other "normal" old-style diesel.

The importers of used EFI diesel 3.0 Toyota 1KZ-T from wrecks in Japan bring them in sans electronics, and claim that they make just as much power with an ordinary pump tacked on; to say this is to the seller's advantage, obviously, but I doubt it's anywhere near the truth.
