For those who are uninclined to have a generic muffler modified to fit their Vanagon, and equally uninclined to spend $250... I have a stainless steel bodied '86-91 muffler, made by the OE supplier to VW/South Africa, for $105 (with listmember discount). The stainless construction (excluding flanges) might well be worth the cost difference alone, as compared to a generic muffler. For '83-85 I have OEM mild steel mufflers for $75. Both mufflers fit right the first time, work with the stock Vanagon exhaust brackets, and have the correct flow characteristics for the Vanagon exhaust as intended by Volkswagen (as opposed to a generic "can," which may or may not). While it may be cheaper to modify something generic, getting the "right one" really isn't all that expensive either - certainly not $250 if you know where to shop. :-) - Ron Salmon The Bus Depot, Inc.
