That wire is likely your problem. What year and model do you have? The 86 and newer models all have the tach wire from the ignition coil to the instrument cluster, even the few models that originally came without a tach. The earlier models do not have the tack wire although at least some 1985 models have the green wire at the instrument cluster but the wire ends near the fuse panel. To add a tach to one of these you need to splice into the green wire and run a wire all the way back to the coil.
