Canada Customs will charge you GST and any possible duty on the commercial
items you are taking in. Then on your way back you have to visit them again
and get the money refunded for the items you did not sell. Keep track of
serial numbers and the like, the more organized you are the better.
Free trade... yes it exists, but it is correctly called the North America
Free Trade Agreement, which means that a product made in Canada / USA /
Mexico can travel between those countries without tariffs. However, if you
are taking a German [for example] made item to Canada you will have to pay
duty on it.
My recommendation with "Canada Customs and Revenue Agency" is to be 100%
honest with them. If you try to sneak something across and they discover
that, they will nail you to the wall. If you are honest with them, they
will *usually* let you in with paying a lot less than you should. Or you
could get the bastard that took me into the back room and questioned me for
over 30 minutes about my trip to Seattle to deliver the 1984 German Army
DoKa we sold in September. THAT was fun... not! :(

engines to show and maybe sell
I am planning a trip into Canada in my vanagon (vanagon content) with to
visit potential Zamboni engine customers. What would be involved in crossing
the border with my products as goods not yet sold but very well could be
sold. When I get to the border Is there a duty to be paid or a bond that
would need to be posted. I don't want to find out the hard way by showing up
at the border when they start asking questions like anything to declare? I
don't want to spend the day at the border crossing while they try to decide
if I am braking the law
and why do they call it free trade
any thoughts or insights
