This may be off the topic of off color jokes but I just returned from a 65 mile round trip to a VW recycling yard in California down by the Mexican border where there are many auto junk yards. I especially wanted to find the metal backing strip of the headliner for he dome light. I knwo I could have made one but I wnted to explore finding an exact part rather than fabricate. I had my faith in humanity boosted and was humbled by the recycling yard manager who gave me several of the parts I came for for free. I had to insist on giving him at least a few dollars and force it into his hand before I left. Many of us do not see the kind of poverty that exists close to the Mexican border. Perhaps he knew how far I drove to find the dome lights and metal backing strips, but I don't often see free favors these days. We tell a lot of jokes about Mexicans (Beaners, etc.) in California, but I wanted to say something about the gentle nature and generosity of one segment of society that is dirt poor but so rich in spirit. I have my parts and extras to spare and also a richer heart. William Polowniak |
