I've done exactly what you are considering. What I did was add both a light over the passenger side (Mirror image of the factory light over the driver's side) and a light over the sliding door. The DPO had installed an alarm, and as part of that install, they added a door light switch on that sliding door and wired it into the factory interior light.

Rather than tap into other wiring, I just extended the wiring from the dome light over the driver's door to the new ones I installed over the passenger side and sliding door. All I needed to do was loosen and lower the headliner over the driver compartment.
