Most members are familiar with searching the archives. search "topic" in vanagon sent to listserv@gerry.vanagon.com will bring to your email account a multitude of past advise. About antifreeze we have the orange stuff, the green stuff and the blue stuff. With regards to power steering fluid we have Dextron III transmission fluid and the special blend from VW, a bit pricey but thinner for the cooler climates. I have heard that the orange antifreeze has smaller molecules and streak out your cracks. The green stuff has phosphate that rots our heads and the blue stuff???? I have stuck with the green stuff as that is what was in the van when I purchased it. It is a brand made by 76 gas stations that is "safe for aluminum blocks" what ever that means. The power steering fluid I first bought was from vw. I was getting ready to add when it was clearly written on the bottle that this fluid does not mix with atf. How was I to know what was in the resevoir. I called the shop which had serviced the van in the past and this explanation was given. If the power steering resevoir cap is red this indicates atf fluid. If the cap is green this indicates the more expensive vw power steering fluid. Mine 87 is red. My colorful question to the list is "Does anyone have a green cap on their resevoir?" If so, what kind of fluid do you use? thanks gary
