Are you sure it isn't the alternator belt trying to recharge a low battery?

Hello All!

This is my first post to the list. First off, I got an 86 2WD van about a month ago (for free). I love the thing! Not driving it yet, as I had heard of possible engine problems with it, and wanted to verify/fix all the small things with it. I drove it for about 30 miles this weekend, after replacing the fuel pump, and it drove great! However, after not starting it for 2 days, tonight it hesitated on startup. I gave it some gas, and it IMMEDIATELY began to squeal EXTREMELY loudly. I shut it down and restarted it and it was fine. Checked out everything in the engine bay, and it all looked fine, so I revved the engine. If I rev it slowly, it sounds fine, but if I rev it quickly, it begins to make that noise until I let off of the throttle. I have narrowed it down to immediately behind the crank pulley. I'm also afraid the block might have possible water jacket problems, the previous owner mentioned it, but couldn't remember what the problem was.

I'm afraid that it's a bearing going out, and would like some suggestions about what to do. Are the engines in these worth rebuilding? I'd love to keep the stock engine, but there seem to be alot of people swapping in subbie/new VW engines. Any thoughts on this? I'd really like to cheap costs low, so I'd prefer to rebuild it. Anyone sell rebuild kits?

Also, Can anyone tell me were the reverse lamp switch is at? I'm assuming it's on the transmission, my back-up lights are always on.

Thank you for your time, Matthew
