I agree that thinner treads are better. I run 185r14's (equivalent to a 185/83r14?), and I don't ever hydroplane or slide. The narrow tread focuses the weight into a small area, digging into whatever it meets. I use them off-road, too, and have no problems. I also think they are easier to steer (but less tracking maybe). They are a stiff sidewall, so I don't get mushy steering. PLUS, they fit into the spare carrier easier!
