Subject: Alternator advice on 85 Wasserbox
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hey all,

I've only had my water cooled 85 for a few months. During this time I started having a problem with battery charging. As the battery problems started I noticed increasing simultaneous flashing of the battery and O2 lights. I've read accounts where the flashing lights usually indicate an internal grounding problem in alternator. So.....change the alternator right? Not exactly.

I pulled the alternator to determine which type I had. The unit I pulled was a Bosch AL27X. This unit had the W terminal on the back, but nothing was plugged into it. My situation on repair day was that I couldn't get an new or rebuilt unit, so I accepted an allegedly tested unit from a used parts dealer. I didn't even have to change the pulley.

To make a long story short, when I start the van, both lights are on full time. Is this as simple as I got a bum alternator? I plan on pulling it apart again this weekend, but I'm reluctant to invest on a new or rebuilt without knowing the status of mine. I'll take it to the local parts place and have it bench tested, but is there anything else that can be done prior to ordering up a new alternator.

I'll welcome any and all advice.

David
