Subject: [WetWesties] Shorts in Wires
Hi All,
I have a few questions. I don't have any extra $$$
right now to pay a mechanic to fix my bus so I want to
'try it myself'
Here's the trouble:
Bus is a 72 Westy retro-fitted into a 76 (2ltr) with
Fuel Injection (Franinsteined in the engine
compartement any how).
The trouble is at the double relay. It first went bad
a few weeks after my fuel pump had been replaced (me
thinks they screwed up the wires???). I replaced the
double relay. Bus ran fine for a couple of days, then
quit. The double relay dead again!!! (shorted out)
I know I've got some short somewhere (gotta be:-), so
I test the wires at the double relay. My question is
if I did that right (before I dig out all those wires
and replace them). I used a Multi-meter. It has only
one setting for oms ½, that's at 'times 1k.' Is this
setting good enough for finding shorts? Some of the
wires I tested pegged the meter, some went 1/2 way.
Most of the "bad" wires go to the starter and fuel
pump. Explains why fuel pump won't turn off after I
turn on the ignition then turn it off again. I have
to break the circut to stop it. (but might also be
shorted double relay).
I'm totally new to this short finding stuff, so any
help is a apreciated. My main concern is if my
Muti-meter om ½ setting is right for finding shorts.
Please let me know if any of you know. If so then
next I can post which wires test as shorted. I'm
concerned that they might be giving a false reading if
attached to the starter and or fuel pump (no I don't
have a Bently manual...have a 2 others though and have
looked at Type2.com for info etc. ...I'm begging
family for a book gift certificate so I can order one.
I just don't have ANY extra cash, cept for a few feet
of wiring :-)
I'm afraid to rewire anything until I know for darn
sure where the shorts are. I've got my wire
strippers, connectors, and color coded wires ready to
go...
