I have carried petrol "up top" on my various Westys many times over the years (Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, not so much need to do so in N. Am.). Only problem I can see is on a roll-over. Getting hit head on, the petrol will NOT be your first worry. Yes, put down a carpet up-top as the cans rub the gel coat.

I only fill the cans about 80% full. Unlike what Ron said, I put the cans on their LONG edge with the cap UP! so as that whatever comes out is vapour, not liquid. I also burp the cans when they get hot to relieve the pressure.

I have only ever used plastic Gerry-cans. I find that they do not seal well (petrol or water) so I have taken to using the rubber seal out of used oil filters and cutting them to fit the cap circumference and then I use Automotive-Goo to seal the ends. This way I can crank down the cap and get a good seal. m2cw, Malcolm
