Hi Mike,

Thanks for the update. I'm about to install a 6P12 in our '85 Westy so your post was perfect timing. What's an Extend-A-Stay tee and where can I get one? I assume its a regulator that attaches to a portable butane bottle? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Scott -

The Extend-A-Stay is a brass T-fitting which you install between your propane tank and regulator. The RV shop that did mine was able to squeeze it in by bending the copper tubing that goes up into the van.

Once you have it in place, you can attach a standard DOT propane tank (butane is a different gas) using a high-pressure hose that you get with the Extend-A-Stay. It has a standard propane tank fitting, the type with the left-hand-thread, on one end. You don't need another regulator. It has built in pressure sensing fittings so you can detach the hose without shutting off the propane from the main tank.

The advantages are that you can take along extra gas without having to attach another tank to your van. The disadvantage is that the propane tank takes up room in the van, and is not the safest companion you will ever have. It's also not as convenient to have to hook up the hose when you stop for the night.

I suspect if I were going to use it a lot, I would work out a method of leaving the hose hooked up to the T all the time, so I only had to screw it into the tank.

The fitting is $30-40. A short hose is $10-15. RV shops or Camping World on the web.
