If you're sure you got the right ground, then yes, the motor is what's
left.  Not common for it to fail open though -- usually they get sticky and
don't want to turn, but still draw current.  The resistor is only involved
with the two lower speeds, the high speed goes direct to the motor (or to a
terminal at the end of the resistor, I forget).
