Subject: Sold my 81,
but need a gas filler neck grommet........help with size needed
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Volks,

I sold my 81 today, and the new owner was happy as a clam.

This past weekend i replaced the shift rod bushings above the gas tank, and the fuel tank grommets as well. Well, when I was done i pured about 4 gallons of gas in the tank, smelled no fumes, saw no leaks, and drove it around the block to test if I had the shift linkage adjusted right.

Well, the new owner stops for gas on the way home to fill the tank, and guess what...gas is puring out....she calls me and i told her to stop by and i will fix. Well, I could see that it was the fuel filler grommet (pg 39 bus depot catalog, #9)..So, I remove the filler neck and reinstall, hopjng it fixed itself....add a few gallons gas, and same thing. The width of the filler neck is 58.5 mm near where it goes into the tank.........does this mean i need to order the grommet for the 70mm tank hole? Sinse the other option is a 50mmm i though t this made sense...............

I convinced her it would be cool to drive home, just do not fill the tank more than half full until this is fixed............I want to overnight her the part and she was very understanding. I just want to be sure and order the right part.
