I think GL means: Got you for another $1100.00, its something that only
VW dealers know about.
I do know that the L series has vinyl door panels and the GL has better
quality / design fabric. The GL also has upgrades seats and sliding door
panels. The GL also has padded fabric headliner and the L has vinyl.
There are other subtle differences if you had the two side by side.
I put an 82 GL Interior in my Westfalia and it was a visual improvement
from the vinyl stuff that was there as an L series.
