Sonya's 74 Honda Civic had this feature too. After she had the car for three years I discovered that if you hold the door latch open you could lock the door without a key while the door was open.

When I told her this good news it was not thanks I received but "why didn't you discover that three years ago?"

I've already tried it with the Vanagon - no go :-(
