Joel,

The cables can be replaced. I used 1/16" braided cable, along with 1/16' model airplane wheel collars which are a perfect fit to replace the (swaged?) cable ends that fit into a plastic receptacle on the regulator. The wheel collars clamp onto the cable with a set screw.

IHere's a not-so-great picture with the original cable end on the right, and the wheel collar version on the left.
