Using a plug-in night light, a double-gang electrical box, a cover plate with switch cutout on one side and a two hole receptable opening on the other side, and a household light dimmer switch with push on/off, I built a controller for my soldering iron for use when working on my 88 GL (vanagon content -[;<)> ! and other projects. With the iron plugged into one part of the receptacle and the night light plugged into the other, turning the dimmer switch varies the voltage, adjusting the temperature of the iron. The light dims or brightens accordingly. Problem: There is no way to get a precise temperature setting, because at best, with only light dimming to indicate hotness, it's a bit of a guess. Question: Does anyone have a suggestion as to some type of counter that can be installed/used instead of a light? Any input would be appreciated. John Rodgers 88 GL Driver |
