If you're going to keep it for a few years, bite the bullet and convert! I love the power the inline 4 from Tiico provides. I just came back from a family vacation and had a lot of interstate driving. I ran 80-85 mph (according to my speedo) with passing power to spare. If I ever own another vanagon, you can bet it will have an inline 4 in it!
