With the gauge mounted in the oil pressure switch port, you are really
seeing the case temperature as the oil is not actually flowing past the
sensor. This may through the reading off by 10 or 15 degrees. For an air
cooled engine this temperature is ideal. It is hot enough to burn off
water and fuel contaminants, yet cool enough to maintain good viscosity.
You also have some reserve for unusual conditions to raise the oil temp
without a problem. Be happy.

I'm running a temp gauge and sender from an 87 Audi 5000, the sender
mounts in the oil pressure port on the bottom side of my type IV
Engine.
I've also tried the sump plate sender and get about the same temps.
I run an oil cooler inside of engine compartment. PIC
