My 2 cents worth: I today finished changing the rear heater core. It only took 3 weeks (fast for me). I had a lot of distractions. Anyway, I took out the original heater core and replaced it with a new dealer furnished heater core. Our friends at VW updated the heater core, the new model does not have a bleeder port (the old did). The parts supplier to VW changed the mold and eliminated the bleed port. Darn, I really liked the bleeder vent concept. You could use the port to fill the heater core with coolant and then bleed out the air with the engine running. But alas, no more. First I connected the lower heater hose to the new heater core. Then I filled the new heater core with water using a flex neck funnel at the top hose connection. Then I connected the top coolant hose to the heater core. I hope that I filled the coolant system. I started the van and ran it at idle for 15 minutes to check for leaks. The new heater core belched out plenty of heat. The vehicle did not overheat so I assume that I let no aid bubbles into the coolant system. I will keep my eye on it for the next few days, and then assume another job well done. Good luck to all who attempt this repair.
