If it's a manual trans you can reverse the half-shafts, re-grease and go another 140,000. Color code the inside CV joints with spray paint before disassembly. Just unbolt them (without dropping them on your face) re-grease & bolt back on the opposite sides. Now the bearing surface being worn going forward were the ones only being used for reversing previously. Clever, those Germans. I wrote an article on this for the Transporter a few years back including a detail of how to make your own "special tool" to easily reach the bolts for the outer joints. I can probably dig it up if you need more detailed input. WesV
