Thoughts -- Analog voltmeter ought to work -- may not read "correctly" but should be repeatable. Digital might be ok too. RS has little plug-in AC voltmeters meant to monitor line voltage, cost ?$12?

Otherwise, just try soldering different sizes of stuff and get a feel for the setting you need -- mark on dial. Nice thing is being able to turn it way down when idle so it doesn't burn up the tip.
