Subject: # archive search problems and tips
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi Volks,

I've been enjoying the archives quite a bit using the email search option (the web search was unbearably slow or crashed completely). Still, I have a few nagging problems that I haven't solved yet, even after reading the server help file (info refcard) thoroughly:

1. It seems that the server doesn't like LONG LINES. Every time the line reaches a certain length (about 60 chars) the line is wrapped and the command rejected or not fully executed due to the words being passed to the next line. This happens usually for long commands, e.g. "search in subject" or getpost commands. Funnily, if I copy and paste the GETPOST command list part from search results with many results, and even though the original spanned several lines, the server processes just the first line and ignores the rest. Of course some of my problems might be related to my email program (actually a web mail service) wrapping long lines, but then the search results containg long getpost command list shows that it's not the culprit. What I do to solve the problem is split the GETPOST command to many smaller ones, but this is time consuming and breaks the thread. Maybe there is some character to be but at the end of the line, to tell the server to concatenate the lines (similar to what is done in several programming languages)?

2. After some head scratching, I've found how to do the search only in the subject line (gives much better relevant results). Still, the syntax is very limiting and due to the line length limiting mentioned above is almost useless (because most of the line is used up by the syntax (syntax capitalized):

SEARCH heater IN VANAGON WHERE SUBJECT CONTAINS vented

The syntax requires at least one parameter in the message and one in the subject, so I can search for max 1 word in the subject line. Any better ideas?

**if possible, please send me a copy via p-mail too since I often miss responses on this very active list.

===== Cheers, TinkerMan
