Subject: 85 Westy stuck in gear
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hello Volks and Happy Holidays

I'm new to the list, but a long time subscriber to type2.com. I have a 71 Westy that I've enjoyed the pleasure of for 11 years.

Today, I found a 85 or 86 Westy at a mechanics shop. I stoped to check it out. I was told by the mechanic that the clutch slave cylinder had gone out. They replaced it BUT, as the owner was trying to slam it into gear he ruined the tranny. It would only engage on a forward gear (don't know which one). It is for sale for the paultry price of $800. I'm considering purchasing it. I was hoping you fine folks could help me determine how much $ it'll take to get it back on the road. So my questions are:

1) Is it possible that the problem is just the shift linkage? I had the same problem with my 71 once where the linkage was slipping. I'm even embarassed to admit that I purchased another tranny before solving the problem. Is there a procedure to confirm proper operation of the shift linkage? I don't own a Bentley for the Vanagon yet:-).

2) If it is the tranny, how much would one cost? I live in the deep south where used parts for a Vanagon are like hen's teeth.

3) How do I determine the year of this bus? It is brown below and tan up, and has a Wolfsburg badge.

4) Any links/info on procedures to check out the operation of the engine and the infamous head gasket problem would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input in advance. Hopefully, this is a steal and I'll be a regular 'round here:-)
