I've got a VDO gauge and kept the idiot light on my Air Cooled. They are definitely worth the money. I ran 140 K on my air cooled without any gauges before I rebuilt the engine and after the rebuild I installed a full set of gauges, Oil P, Oil Temp, Cylinder Head Temp, Volts Gauge and it is very interesting how the driver can move the pointers by his driving habits. To me they offer guidelines that can extend your engine life. I can readily see that fighting head winds builds up cylinder heat temp and oil temp. I use the oil pressure gauge to let me know when the pressure drops on cold mornings that the oil is warm enough to push the engine a little harder...... the oil temp takes thirty minutes to indicate this temperature change. So in most situations: more information is good to have. I'm running the same Super Sun Tach that I bought in 1979 and I've used it on five vehicles, great $69.00 investment.
