I'm sure this is a worn-out topic (but since we're discussing plugs,) I ran Bosch plus-4 plugs in my last Vanagon and they seemed to give extra power and I didn't notice any damaging side effects. Recently I had a friend tell me that on an old engine, it's not a good idea to run them because they cause quicker wear to the older parts. Is this true?

There are a lot of simple experiments that an individual can do on his own. Splitting the plugs, indexing the plugs, using ventilated point sets checking resistance in spark plug wires, different valve settings, magnetos, capacitor discharge ignition etc. I've found that the simplest way to get a few extra horsepower is to buy your fuel away from major cities. Unleaded fuel in Cities is full of anti-polutant compounds (water) and has less usable octane than the fuel sold out in small counties. I get more power, more MPG when I buy fuel after I leave Dallas Texas County when I'm going on my 250 mile camping trips. Don't stop experimenting you might find a small miracle.
