The previous owner of my 86GL and various generations of vanagon/bus/combi/ had the same problem with the vans not fitting in his garage. He took some old bent rims and cut them down till he had the clearence he needed to get in the garage and just pushed them in or used a comealong/winch. Once inside no problems hight wise just that when the built the garage it must have been cheeper tohave a 6 foot door than a seven. It has been 20 years And is still in use.
