In the been there done that archives I'm very pleased to find Tom Carringtons meticulous instruction pages. I see that there are minor variations between the WaserBoxer procedures and the Air-Cooled procedures. So minor as to be overlooked unless you're in the middle of the job and reread both sets of instructions again. Thanks Tom for your excellent web site its going to save me a lot of typing in the future.

Stan Wilder -------------------

The nut for the top starter bolt is inside the engine compartment right behind the throttle body 17mm I believe. The other end of this bolt does not require a wrench it has a T head that keeps it from turning. It is best to put the lower bolt back on, diconnect the battery and electric to the starter before you remove this nut (keeps the starter from falling unless you have someone under there to hold it).

Stan Wilder 83 Air Cooled Westfalia -------------------------- Remove the starter motor: Disconnect the cables from the starter motor, if possible. The starter is secured by an easy to remove 17mm nut on a stud at the bottom, and a not so easy bolt that passes through the engine case on the top. To remove the top bolt, open up the engine compartment and find the 17mm nut hidden under/behind the throttle body. Put a box-end wrench on the nut, and have a helper hold it or (in my case) jam the wrench so that it won't move. Then slide under the van, and remove the upper bolt with a 8mm hex-head socket on the end of a 6" extension. Once both bolts are removed, the starter can be pulled off and placed out of the way.
