I think the later models seem to sit lower because of their plastic bumper covers, side cladding, and air dams. I doubt if they are actually any lower.

Didn't the later years ('88> ) sit lower than the earlier?

I have an '87 Westy and it definately sits a couple of inches higher than the later models of Weekender and Westy.

Any source for these springs? Seems like the way to go to maintain ride quality and factory suspension travel.
