Mike,

They are about a half inch lower plus the side cladding "visually" drops to appearance of the body an extra 2 inches. You will find this in the Carats (circa 88-91). I don't know about the South African Caravelles.

H & R also sells lowering springs which will drop the height about an extra half inch like the Carats. NOT recommended for heavy Westies as many have already found out.

As for William's wish for a tall Vanagon, you should see John Wessel's highly midified SyncroMog. It may not be a huge monster truck but I can almost guarantee that the tops of your sideview mirrors will clear the bottom of his. Even my 16" Syncro which is substantially taller than regular Syncros and buses can clear his mirror.
