On the contrary, in the case of my Mercedes it was the alarm that scared away the thief who only took the closest item (a picnic basket) and left behind hundreds of dollars in cash, credit cards and expensive clothing.

But your idea is a good low cost solution never the less. Just like putting a security alarm sign in your front yard or "beware of the dog" sign on your gate.

By the way I love those door bells that bark like a dog. Is there such an item for a car that gets disturbed? If there is I want one for the Vanagon.
