Brian,

Tiico is actually the Johnnie-Come-Lately of the VW inline-4 conversion world. VW did it first. They did that with the I4 diesel. Then they continued to do that for a while in South Africa. IIRC they only offer the inline 5 there now.

Following VW's lead, many aftermarket converters used parts from diesel Vanagons which permitted the engine to lie at a more dramatic angle. This permitted the head and induction system to be tucked under the rear lid just like VW did.

The first aftermarket supplier of these engine conversions that I am aware of was Overland under the label of Eurospec. They eventually left the Vanagon engine conversion business to concentrate on other VW and Audi products.

Some time later, Tiico came into being. They are the only ones I am aware of who carry a kit close to complete.

BTW, I have one of the early "homebrewed" inline 4 conversions assembled around 1990. Engine is tucked under the lid as VW designed them to be.
