While the idea of a super-efficient oil filter is appealing to me as
well, the sight of that "miracle" fuel device on the very same web page
forces me to look at their entire product line with a jaundiced eye. I
always want to believe in these claims, but I've learned that most
products that seem too good to be true, usually are. Having worked as
an engineer for a small cruise line, I'm familiar with some pretty good
techniques for keeping oil clean. The main engines on our ships used
integral oil centrifuges, which deposited particulates onto a paper
cylinder, which was removed and discarded when the oil was changed. The
one problem, mentioned briefly before, is that of acidity. No filter
can prevent this, and it definitely contributes to engine wear.
If you really want an objective test of this new oil filter system, I
recommend that you send in a sample of your used oil for testing, each
time you do an oil change. On the ship, we did this at every oil
change! See how they compare to oil from a "conventional" filter setup,
and you will have your proof. Then be prepared to laugh at all the
cynics, or enjoy a big helping of crow pie! : )

If it were not for Stuart MacMillan's contribution on tom's web page and
news from many others regarding truckers who use it to extend the life
of
their engines I would think it was snake oil too. I'm doing a LOT of
research into this and so far everything convinces me it is worth the
investment. Not everything is snake oil.
But even skepticism is a good thing. It gives one caution to temper
unbridled enthusiasm.
I'm going to install the Trasco system and make my own research prove me
right or wrong.

Hmmm... sounds like snake oil to me... That web page also sells one of
those fuel gizmos that gives you much more power and far better fuel
economy. If that works out for you, I know where you can get a little
sticker that makes your cell phone work in a cave...

Stan,
From what I read about Trasco oil filter systems it is not just the cost
of
the reusable canister but the cost of the oil that is figured in to the
equation. I'm hoping to find people other than Stuart MacMillan who have
tested out this system to get actual in use feedback from more than one
person.
The Trasco oil filter system does such a good job that it only requires
an
oil change only every 10,000 miles. The testing done by Stuart MacMillan
has
impressed me very much. I'm not so much interested in the cost as the
efficiency however the company calculations show projected savings over
100,000 miles to be $440.
This is the information from their site: "The Trasko Refining Unit came
about when the Govt. officials of the Tokyo metropolis started exploring
the
possibilities of improving the maintenance of their vehicles for
increasing
their longevity and reducing environmental impacts. In 1985 the
Trasko-Bee
Corporation in a joint venture with the Subaru Motor Corporation in
Japan
introduced this refining unit and won an award from the Mayor of Tokyo.
The
manufacturing premises were expanded to establish The Trasko-Korea Co.
Ltd.
August 1998, LOFMR introduces the Trasko Ultra-Fine Unit for the first
time
and makes it available both for fleet and individual use."
Has anyone on this list other than Stuart MacMillan actually used the
Trasco
system? Stuart uses it on his vanagon and his reports are very, very
positive.
