Kinda true: A diesel engine is much more thermodynamically efficient
than a gasoline engine (that's why it uses so much less fuel; less is
converted to waste heat), but under normal operation (driving) both will
produce more heat than the heater core can dissipate. It's the radiator
that will be putting out a lot less heat with a diesel vehicle.
It is also true, as others have mentioned, that a diesel sitting at idle
will not get very warm, and so the van's interior won't really start
warming up until you are under way.

Excuse my unfamiliarity with the subject, but isn't alot of the heat
produced by a diesel engine used up in it's operation, leaving a
relatively
scant amount to heat up the cavernous interior of a Vanagon? Granted
it's
much better than any of the air-cooled models (without aux heat), but
not as
good as a gasoline fired engine.

When it gets below 10 degrees or so, the Eberspracher auxiliary heater
helps a lot! A block heater is, IMHO, mandatory in all but the hottest
climates, and helps your engine start putting out heat much sooner.

Mine gets plenty warm, but then southern California isn't exactly known
for
cold weather. It's a long way from the engine to the heater and the some
heat will be lost. I use an 80C thermostat and find it adequate.
Others
have installed the 87C version specified in the ETKA listing for more
heat
and I can verify that it makes a huge difference. Something else to
check
is that the heater valve is adjusted properly and actually opens fully
when
the lever is all the way to the right.
