If it makes anyone feel better we don't have to all run and buy Toyotas - the VW Quantum is a very easy fan motor swap. Under the hood, pull the fresh air intake (4 screws or so), pull it out and Voila! - there's your fan motor. I naively thought the vanagon would be similar. . .
