On my 87, I have to reach in and flick the little locking lever upwards to grab.

Reach where, you ask? When you open the door, on the inside of the door, just above the inside handle is a little black thing with a notch cut out of it. That's the receiver part of the door catch.

When you open the door (all the way), look down the side of the body and you can see the little finger that has to go into the receiver.

It's very hard to explain, easy to see. I haven't fixed mine. I'm just getting adept at giving it the flick.
