Heater fan and core malfunctions are not all that uncommon in many vehicles, especially older ones. When the newest possible Vanagon is 11 yrs old and probably more like 15-18 yrs old, does this seem all that unusual? Where the listee problems seem to be are in this later age group. The reason the Vanagon fan sticks out in ones mind is the same reason Any PITA job is remembered, because it is a PITA!!
