This is a long drawn out discussion and lot of your decision has to be just personal preferences. Air Cooled engine rebuilds are about half that of Water Cooled. The air Cooled system has fewer parts since it has no radiator, water pump, hoses, etc. I've been driving my air cooled for seven years and I got 140K out of my first engine. After reading the Vanagon list and WetWesties list for over two years I would never own a Water Cooled but you've got one now so you can make a better informed decision on that. As an Air Cooled owner I'd say don't be afraid of an air cooled, they are simple machines and if you've got a good engine you're 90% trouble free.
