The crack you are discribing is in the right side cylinder head at the top studs that hold the head in place this is very common. If the engine does have only 70 K on it then new heads would be in order Bob Donalds http://www.bostonengine.com

I have a coolant leak (84 Westy with 70,000) which initial diagnosis by taking off air filter and seeing coolant coming out where stud is.. is hairline fracture or rare possibility that touquing might fix. Does this mean I will be out a couple of thousand of dollars? Does it also mean that I should have other side rebuilt which means more $? Any advise will help? I read the info on VW arbitration but assume my vehicle is too old for that?
