Since I buy 80-83 Vanagons for parts and restore 80-83 Westfalias I get
the worst and dirtiest engines you can imagine.
I've seen radical flushing the engine and running Mystery oil free-up
rings, quieten lifters and improve compression.
On an engine running under normal conditions there isn't any need to use
flush more than once every twenty thousand miles. Just run 8 oz. of
Mystery oil for about 300 miles before you do your oil change and it
should never get particle buildup.
Some people run Mystery Oil as an additive but I think it does all its
going to do within ten heat cycles and by then the detergent properties
are pretty well destroyed by heat.
I'll admit that I could be wrong on that last line.

On the down side if I have to rebuilt the top end at least the parts are
cleaner
