Subject: Cold engine Idle problem

My 83.5 water cooled Vanagon has developed a problem. When the engine is cold, it will not hold an idle. It idles for a minute then cuts out. When I try to restart it after this happens, it cranks and cranks for a bit then it will finally start (kinda like it's getting no gas or spark). As long as I'm giving it gas, it runs. And once the engine warms up, it idles with no problems. Any ideas?? Please keep in mind that I am primarily an aircooled guy, so when taking about electronics anc computer stuff, please explain to me like I'm a 4 year old ;-)

Peace, JB '66 Split Window Camper '83 H20 Vanagon
