That gunk cleaning procedure should be used only a few times over a few years. Most engines don't need it but the 8 oz of Mystery oil between changes actually aids in cleaning (Air Cooled get hot, burn oil to the pistons and clog up the ring groves). As for water cooled I don't think thay get that hot. I just use radical cleaning to try to salvage an abused engine ...............Since I buy 80-83 Vanagons for parts and restore 80-83 Westfalias I get the worst and dirtiest engines you can imagine.
