Hi Scott,

There's less than an inch --- probably closer to 5/8". Enough clearance to get a nut in easily. Buy lights that have the aiming/adjustment screws or bolts on top of the bumper. My van came with lights that the previous owner had installed. They were adjustable by loosening the bolt under the top of the bumper, swivelling the light and then tightening the bolt. Unfortunately you could only do this with the bumper OFF the van -- which made accurate aiming a bit of a chore -- no wonder he never hooked them up. I threw those away and replaced them with ones I could aim...........
