65k, no rust............... Yeah! I got an 81 Westy sitting in my drive way that has 34K showing on the speedo. I'd like to believe that was the right mileage but that wasn't me you saw falling off that turnip truck. My 83 Westy shows 68K on the speedo but its a 100 MPH speedo so I don't have a clue what year the spedo came out of. Real mileage on the 83 Westy is 287 K and I have the original speedo to prove it. I'd say that your buddies has got two or three times that mileage on it because those auto trannys will last well past 100K before they have problems. However the price was right so even if its got 300K its still the right price. 80$....... that is a fair price for a dead car.
