The original poster of this thread wound up buying Mercedes lugbolts with a beefier head but still no longer than the Audi bolts. They are both 27mm (1&1/8") from the tip to the seat.

I've tried the Audi bolts with 9mm spacers (anywhere from 8 to 10mm are used by most Vanagon owners switching to the 15" Audi Turbo rims) and find get only 5 revolutions of the bolt before tightening. VW recommends at least 7.5 turns. Interestingly the stock Vanagon bolt does about 9 revolutions with the steel wheels.

Some say if the bolt bites into the hub as far as its own thickness (in this case 14mm) it is sufficient.
