I'll have to agree on the importance of plug wires on the VWs. My van actually can with the right plug wires, but for a '77, not '87. They use a different pressure plug to connect to the distributor.

I didn't notice this until one of my spark plugs got a big jolt o' volt and blew up inside the cylinder. Had to rebuild the head! Check to make sure your wires and cap match up. I also dab a little dielectric grease on all my electrical connections. Keeps the corrosion away :-).
